Fabian Schar enjoyed an eventful start to Euro 2024 this afternoon as Switzerland kicked off their opening game of Group A with a 3-1 win over Hungary.
Germany – also in Group A – kicked off the tournament with an emphatic 5-1 win over Scotland last night and Switzerland raced into an impressive 2-0 lead. However, Hungary pulled one back in the second half and piled the pressure on, only for Breel Embolo to ease any late nerves with a 93rd-minute goal.
Schar played the full 90 on the right side of a back three and went on a trademark mazy run in the first half, ending in a blocked shot, but went down awkwardly holding his knee before managing to continue for the final 10 minutes.
Next up is Spain vs Croatia (5pm kick-off on ITV1), where we could see a glimpse of three former Mags in Mikel Merino, Joselu and Ayoze Perez.
All three were called up to the final Spanish squad for Euro 2024 and will hope to play a part before the final game of today sees Italy take on Albania (8pm kick-off on BBC One). A penny for Sandro Tonali’s thoughts, who will be forced to watch on again as he completes the final two months of his worldwide ban from football.
