Newcastle set to look elsewhere as top Eddie Howe target proves too expensive – Report

Newcastle United look set to be priced out of a summer move for Dominic Solanke; the Bournemouth striker who is considered a long-term target of Eddie Howe’s.

It’s emerged that a £65m release clause exists in his current deal, but that only applies to the Premier League’s ‘big six’. The Chronicle report that Newcastle would have to pay more than this figure to sign the 26-year-old, making him a non-starter, as things stand.

Newcastle will need to sign another striker should Callum Wilson depart this summer. Solanke ticks several boxes after 19 goals last season and several years in the Premier League, but there’s no chance we’ll match that £65m fee, never mind offer more.

Howe is clearly a huge fan of the striker – who be brought to Bournemouth from Liverpool in 2019 – and has already commented on a potential move after links earlier this year.

“Yes, a frustrating story for me because, yes, I love Dominic Solanke,” he said. “I signed him and I rate him very, very highly. But we have not made an enquiry for him and we don’t have the ability to sign a player of that level.”

Things have changed since January – our summer budget will be far bigger and the Cherries may be more open to a sale opposed to losing him mid-season, but it sounds like their top scorer won’t come cheap.
