England open their Euro 2024 campaign against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen tomorrow night hoping to go one better than their penalty shoot-out defeat to Italy three years ago.
Gareth Southgate’s men appear well positioned to make a serious challenge despite concerns over their defensive solidity with Harry Maguire ruled out through injury and left-back Luke Shaw struggling to be fit for the tournament opener.
On the flip side, the likes of Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden come in having enjoyed wonderful seasons at their clubs – Real Madrid and Manchester City respectively – while Harry Kane blazed a trail in his debut year at Bayern Munich.
This tournament represents a real test of nerve for Southgate, who has been accused of being too passive at key moments at the World Cup in 2018 and the final of Euro 2020.
Serbia will be no pushovers, although their form in the warm-up games has been patchy. Wins over Sweden and Cyprus were offset by defeats to Russia and Austria. Much will depend on the form of strikers Dusan Vlahovic and Aleksandar Mitrovic.
