Micah Richards believes Man City star must be more ‘involved’ for England following Serbia win

Micah Richards believes England need to find ways to get Phil Foden more ‘involved’ following his disappointing performance in Sunday’s 1-0 win over Serbia.

A 13th-minute Jude Bellingham goal was enough to separate the two sides as the Three Lions made their fourth consecutive winning start to a major tournament under Gareth Southgate.

Indeed, Bellingham was the standout performer on the night, while he and Bukayo Saka overshadowed Foden, who enters the tournament with great expectations following a stunning season with Premier League champions Manchester City.

Foden still very much has a point to prove at international level, with the 24-year-old now sitting on just four goals and eight assists in 35 senior caps. On Sunday, he cut a peripheral figure on the left flank, creating just one chance and failing to attempt a single shot on the night.

Micah Richards calls for more Foden involvement

Speaking as a pundit after the match, former Man City and Aston Villa defender Richards said it’s ‘sad’ to see Foden struggle to make an impact for his country and believes England need to find ways to maximise his potential.

“It makes me sad when I see a player of Phil Foden’s quality in and out of games,” Richards told BBC One. “At Manchester City, it is all coordinated with Pep Guardiola and the system that they play, we need to find ways to get him involved.

“When he is coming from a wide position it is difficult for him, he goes from pressing out wide to coming back inside and he needs a full back to go and overlap so he can get those combinations going.”

England continue their Group C campaign against Denmark in Frankfurt on Thursday, while Serbia travel to Munich to take on Slovenia.
