According to The Athletic, Newcastle United are locked in talks with Burnley over a deal for James Trafford, but progress has been halted due to a difference in valuations.
They report that Newcastle value the England talent at around £15-18m, but the Clarets are currently demanding £20m, keeping in mind a 20% sell-on clause Man City inserted into his move to Turf Moor last summer.
Interestingly, the same piece reveals that Valencia for Giorgi Mamardashvili had been identified as a summer target, but our focus switched from the Georgian to Trafford after we missed out on European football for the 2024/25 season.
The Athletic have also denied three rumours doing the rounds in the media. They claim Spanish reports claiming we’ve launched bids for Mamardashvili and Barcelona’s Ferran Torres are wide of the mark and also reveal that Asmir Begovic is not close to joining as our third-choice goalkeeper, despite weekend reports.
However, they have revealed that a replacement for Loris Karius is under consideration, suggesting we’d like Trafford as a young back-up option to No.1 Nick Pope and an experienced stopper to give us another option between the sticks.
As for outgoings, Martin Dubravka is expected to find a permanent move after Euro 2024, with the Slovakian receiving interest from Celtic, Saudi Arabia and unnamed clubs in Europe.
