Newcastle are looking to sign a right-sided centre-back this summer and one name who has been regularly linked since the turn of the year is Sporting Lisbon’s Ousmane Diomande.
The Portuguese media haven’t stopped reporting on our interest and they’re back again today, with A Bola claiming we’ve been in contact over a potential summer move to St James’ Park.
They report that we’ve reached out to the Portuguese giants to explore the terms of a deal and it’s believed Lisbon are prepared to sell the 20-year-old for a fee well below his whopping €80m (£67) release clause.
A Bola state that the Ivory Coast star is now available for a fee in the region of ‘€50-60m’ (£42-£50m) and has received interest from Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United and Juventus, although the piece suggests Newcastle are the one Premier League side who’ve approached Lisbon in a bid to strike a deal.
Diomande stands 6ft 3′ and is a right-sided centre-back who’s been praised for his pace, power, confidence in possession and dominance in the air, giving him all of the tools to become a top modern-day defender in the Premier League.
It’s an expensive alternative to Tosin Adarabioyo – who we tried to sign on a ‘free’ before he opted to join Chelsea – but someone like Diomande would be a long-term replace for Fabian Schar and future partner for Sven Botman, not a cut-price squad signing.
Time will tell if these reports from Portugal are true, but Diomande’s name isn’t going away, his price has (allegedly) come down and he ticks several boxes in our search for a RCB.
