According to The Athletic, Newcastle United are one of several Premier League sides who have been in contact with Bologna over a potential move for Italian defender Ricardo Calafiori.
The versatile 22-year-old impressed in Italy’s Euro 2024 opener – a 2-1 win over Albania on Saturday – and has enjoyed a superb season in Serie A.
Calafiori played an integral part in Bologna’s successful league campaign which saw them qualify for the Champions League in fourth, sparking interest in a host of their star players.
Alongside Newcastle, The Athletic report that Liverpool, Brighton and West Ham have also approached the Italian club over a possible deal, although it’s believed Juventus currently lead the race now Thiago Motta has left Bologna to manage the Turin-based club.
Calafiori’s ability to play at centre-back, full-back and defensive midfield will appeal to Eddie Howe – a manager that loves to recruit versatile players – but Bologna will be desperate to keep a hold of their key man after securing Champions League football.
His price tag is likely to creep up and up if he continues to impress at the Euros, but it’s another name to watch out for.
