Olise set to shun King’s Rd for German football royalty

June 23 – Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise looks set to snub Chelsea for a second time to join FC Bayern in the latest twist to his ongoing transfer saga.

The 22-year-old has reportedly agreed personal terms with the Bavarians, who are keen on strengthening after a disappointing season saw them surrender their 11-season Bundesliga streak to Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen.

In order for a move to materialise, FC Bayern will need to part with more than £55 million by triggering the player’s release clause, making him the most lucrative Crystal Palace sale on record.

Chelsea had unsuccessfully attempted to sign the France Under-21 international for a fee in the region of £35 million last summer, thinking they had activated his release clause.

He subsequently signed a new four-year deal at Selhurst Park, lasting until 2027, which included the upgraded buyout clause.

Suggestions the clause is higher for clubs not in the Champions League would have meant Chelsea would have to pay more than £60 million for the 22-year-old, given that Enzo Maresca’s side will play in the Europa Conference League next season.

Olise’s former club Reading are also believed to be due a significant sell-on fee from the transfer.

The 22-year-old is currently away with the French Olympic squad after missing out on a place in Didier Deschamps’ Euro 2024 roster. He tallied 10 goals and six assists in 19 Premier League appearances across an injury-ridden season, where he continued to impress despite his limited game time.
