Early team news for England vs Slovenia – Another baffling call from Gareth Southgate?

According to The Telegraph, it looks like Gareth Southgate will be making just one change to his England side tonight, with Conor Gallagher set to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield.

The Three Lions have already qualified for the last 16 but face Slovenia in tonight’s final group match at Euro 2024, knowing a win will guarantee top spot and a favourable draw in the knockout stages.

England started with a solid yet uninspiring 1-0 win over Serbia before struggling throughout in a 1-1 draw with Denmark, where Southgate refused to hand minutes to Anthony Gordon, Cole Palmer and Adam Wharton despite our struggles out wide and lack of composure in midfield.

Many expected to see a few changes tonight, with Phil Foden looking out of sorts and Bukayo Saka a shadow of the player we saw at Arsenal last season, but The Telegraph’s Matt Law reports that only one change is expected.

I understand the call to mix it up in midfield, as Trent and Declan Rice have failed to convince as a partnership, but why Gallagher? For all of his industry and hard work off the ball, will he really add composure to a team crying out for some quality in possession.

Back to Gordon, it continues to baffle me that he’s being ignored when Foden has looked way off the pace and totally lost on the left. This was Southgate’s chance to try something new, but it seems he’ll stick by his guns in hope of a confidence building win heading into the knockout stages.
