Toon chiefs shocked after £40m talks and top offer for Yankuba Minteh goes public

Newcastle United have been left ‘stunned’ by Everton’s demands for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, according to The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards.

He reports that the Toffees demanded a fee ‘well in excess of £40m’ for the 27-year-old, with Newcastle deeming this a totally unrealistic fee for a striker who will leave on a free next summer if he fails to sign a new deal.

Edwards insists that Newcastle could revive their interest later in the window, but only at a ‘much lower price’ given Calvert-Lewin’s contractual situation, age, injury history and fact he’s only score 14 goals in the last three Premier League seasons.

It’s thought Everton are no longer under any pressure to sell for PSR reasons, hence their silly asking price, but their stance could change later in the window if interest from elsewhere fades and the player doesn’t sign a new deal.

Elsewhere, The Telegraph also reveal that Lyon are leading the way to sign Yankuba Minteh, with the Ligue 1 side now his likely destination after they came forward with the best offer so far.

It’s believed Lyon have bettered Everton’s bid for the Gambian, who has interest from Roma and Borussia Dortmund but appears likely to end up in France, with Newcastle likely to negotiate a buy-back clause and/or hefty sell-on fee in any deal.
