After four and a half hours of turgid England performances at Euro 2024, Gareth Southgate finally gave Anthony Gordon a run out last night…in the 89th minute.
Many were hoping to see the Newcastle United winger to start in Tuesday’s final group match against Slovenia, but Southgate refused to mix it up and made changes too late, with Gordon’s five-minute cameo an insult and token gesture at the end of a 0-0 draw.
Gordon created more chances (1) in a few minutes than Bukayo Saka, Conor Gallagher and Jude Bellingham combined (0). While this highlights how poorly so many of our starters performed, it adds to the bemusement around Gordon, who spoke so impressively in a post-match interview from Germany.
The winger revealed his frustration at his limited game time, urged us to “attack” teams moving forwards and defended fan’s frustrations after boos at full-time, feeling we have to be more direct and brave on the ball following another toothless display. Watch his impressive interview below:
Gordon gives us width, a direct runner with pace and movement in behind and immediately helped create our biggest opening of the game just minutes after entering the pitch.
Southgate’s attempts to play Phil Foden as an inverted left winger have failed and showed no signs of working last night. Surely it’s time to play Kane up front, Gordon down the left, Foden as a No.10, Saka (or Palmer) down the right and Bellingham in a slightly deeper role alongside Declan Rice?
