Newcastle offer contract to free agent – Report

According to The Mirror, Newcastle United have offered a contract to veteran goalkeeper John Ruddy.

With Loris Karius all set to be released and Martin Dubravka expected to depart after he’s competed at Euro 2024, Eddie Howe is on the lookout for a third-choice goalkeeper, with James Trafford targeted as competition for No.1 Nick Pope.

After announcing his departure from Birmingham City, The Mirror’s chief writer Neil Moxley reveals that Ruddy has a host of offers on the table, with Newcastle one of the clubs showing interest.

The out-of-contract goalkeeper would be a squad-filler and emergency option should Nick Pope or potential signing James Trafford suffer injuries, with Mark Gillespie rarely used despite signing a one-year extension on Tyneside.

Howe opted for four goalkeepers last season – Pope, Dubravka, Karius and Gillespie – and it seems we’re searching for an experienced ‘No.3’ who can take up Karius role in the squad, alongside a young shot-stopper who can compete with and eventually replace Pope.

Ruddy has one cap for England and has made over 100 Premier League appearances following spells at Norwich and Wolves.
