Last June, we released a NUFCBlog exclusive revealing Newcastle United’s interest in Malick Thiaw; the AC Milan talent who ticks so many boxes in our search for a young, right-sided centre-back.
12 months on, a raft of reports emerged earlier this week confirming that the club have made contact with the Serie A giants over a potential deal for Thiaw, with Fabrizio Romano even suggesting that Kieran Trippier had been floated their way.
Sources in Italy have now shared their information on Thiaw and AC Milan’s stance on a potential sale, painting a promising picture for Newcastle’s hopes of landing the 22-year-old following long-term interest.
Tuttosport state that we’ve opened talks with the player’s agent after receiving encouragement that Milan would do business if the price is right, with Corriere dello Sport reporting that €30m-€35m could be enough to land the 6ft 3′ German.
As we revealed in earlier this week, Newcastle were quoted a fee in the region of £50m for Thiaw following an enquiry last summer, but it’s hoped his price has come down slightly after an up and down 2023/24 that featured a serious hamstring injury and spell out of the side after Matteo Gabbia took his place in defence. Based on reports emerging from Italy over the past 24 hours, it seems his asking price has come down, giving Newcastle fresh encouragement and an opportunity to pounce after long-term interest.
Newcastle’s relationship with AC Milan may be slightly frosty from the Sandro Tonali saga, but we’ve negotiated a deal with the Serie A giants before and will hope to do the same over Thiaw; a player who will know Tonali well from their season together at the San Siro.
As a talented young right-sided centre-back with power, athleticism, solid fundamentals and confidence in possession, Thiaw could be a superb signing for Newcastle and the ideal long-term partner for Sven Botman.
