eFabian Schar delivered another superb display in Germany to send Switzerland into the quarter-finals of the Euros this afternoon, setting up a potential clash with England next week.
The 32-year-old didn’t put a foot wrong in the Swiss’ 2-0 win over Italy in today’s 5pm kick-off, starring alongside Man City’s Manuel Akanji in a comfortable and well-deserved victory for his country.
The result sees Switzerland become the first team to qualify for the last eight, where they’ll face England on Saturday 6th July if Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions can beat Slovakia in tomorrow’s 5pm kick-off.
Schar is aging like a fine wine and showing his class for club and country, proving once again what a stunning piece of business it was to sign him for £3m six years ago.
After another classy season under Eddie Howe, he’s enjoying a superb tournament with the Swiss, overcoming a few knocks and a broken nose in their group-stage win over Scotland with ease.
Against Italy, he read the play effortlessly, enjoyed a few trademark runs, was dominant in the air and picked a few lovely passes to set up Switzerland attacks. Aside from the odd late Italy chance, he was rarely troubled.
Next up, a battle of three Mags tomorrow as England’s Kieran Trippier and Anthon Gordon face Slovakia’s Martin Dubravka, ensuring at least one Newcastle player will make the semi-finals of the Euros this summer.
