What a complete and utter mess

What a complete and utter mess

As you will know, Newcastle United have been scrambling to raise funds over the past 48 hours to ensure we comply with the Premier League’s PSR rules and avoid a potential points deduction.

After a hectic few days, the club have reluctantly cashed in on two players; Yankuba Minteh (Brighton for £33m) and Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest for £35m).

Newcastle have lessons to learn from this, as it felt at one stage like we’d backed ourselves into a corner by failing to balance the books until the final 24 hours of a three-year FFP period. It left us floundering on Friday and Saturday and forced us to sell two talented young players. However, it’s the Premier League and their ridiculous new rules that have left me frustrated.

Don’t get me wrong, selling Minteh seemed necessary to avoid a points deduction and some will argue we’ve done well to get £33m. We’ve made a £26m profit on the Gambian in the space of 12 months and received a heft fee for Anderson. It goes without saying that I’d far rather they went than see Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes or Anthony Gordon sacrificed, but the predicaments these PSR rules are forcing upon clubs feels wrong.

It sums up the state of FFP/PSR that we’re ‘celebrating’ the sale of one of the most promising teenagers we’ve had in recent years (Minteh) to ensure we avoid a penalty. To some, it’ll feel like we got away lightly, as we’re selling two young talents opposed to losing Bruno to his £100m release clause. Objectively, we’ve come out of this relatively OK in the end, but that’s not the point.

I understand the need to manage ludicrous spending the threatens to spoil the sport, but we are owned by the richest Sovereign Wealth Fund in the world in PIF. We’ve toed the line with FFP ever since Saudi owners arrived (all while Chelsea spend billions and exploit every loophole under the sun), yet here we are being forced to sell players we’ve recently recruited or developed for years in…
