Anthony Gordon responds to £35m exit as worrying claims emerge after Liverpool talks

Anthony Gordon revealed in a recent interview with Gary Neville that Elliot Anderson was his closest friend at Newcastle and it shows in his reaction to the midfielder’s exit.

Responding to Anderson’s farewell post on Instagram, Gordon wrote “Gunna miss you lad😔❤️”, with the England winger learning of his £35m move to Nottingham Forest shortly after England’s last 16 win over Slovakia last night.

On the subject of Gordon’s future, the departure of his best mate on Tyneside has been followed by some worrying claims from The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, who has released an exclusive on Liverpool’s pursuit of the Newcastle winger.

He reports that Gordon was “extremely keen” to join boyhood club Liverpool after the Reds held talks over a late deal for the 23-year-old to ease our PSR concerns close ahead of Sunday’s deadline.

Edwards claims that Gordon’s head has been turned by Liverpool, who could offer him a ‘dream move’ and return to Merseyside. It’s feared that their interest has ‘destabilised’ the player, but The Telegraph report that we have no interest in selling him this summer after a player-plus-cash deal involving Joe Gomez or Jarrel Quansah did not materialise before we sold Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson instead.

The Telegraph add that Newcastle plan to show Gordon some love when he returns from Euro 2024 and insist he remains a big part of our plans under Eddie Howe. Hopefully fans can do the same and any unwanted saga is avoided, as it would create a major headache for the club if our star winger pushed for a move to Anfield.
