Newcastle reveal major change from Mike Ashley era as St James’ Park photo emerges

When Mike Ashley took over and transformed St James’ Park into one big advert for Sports Direct, he changed the famous ‘Newcastle United’ letters on the East Stand and put those hideous blue and red letters either side of it.

While the ‘Sports Direct’ letters have been long gone, the text used for ‘Newcastle United’ remains that used by Ashley’s company – but not anymore.

In a post on Twitter (now X) moments ago, Newcastle have shown work being done to remove the current letters ahead of the 2024/25 season, stripping the East Stand of any links back to our previous owner. See the photo below:

It’s the little things, but this is a nice move from the club, seeing Newcastle United (and the East Stand) dump any previous connections to Mike Ashley as we prepare for the 2024/25 season.

With all signage gone, a stadium expansion still being discussed, the temporary club shop erected outside the ground and the STACK close to being built ahead of the new season, it’s nice to see the wheels in motion both on and off the pitch.
