Bradley Carnell became the latest MLS head coaching casualty this summer.
St. Louis CITY SC have parted ways with Carnell after a frustrating 2024 season to date. Technical Director John Hackworth will manage the team on an interim basis as CITY SC begins their search for a new head coach.
“Given Bradley’s many contributions to the club, this was not an easy decision,” said CITY SC Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel. “Unfortunately, based on our Year 2 results to date, we believe a coaching change is in the best interest of the club as we regroup and look to improve both our performance and our results.”
Carnell was hired as St. Louis’ first head coach in January 2022 and led the club to a successful debut in MLS last year. St. Louis enjoyed a 17-12-3 record in regular season play, earning the No. 1 seed heading into the MLS Cup Playoffs.
However, results have been hard to come by in 2024 for St. Louis, with the club posting a 3-7-10 record to date. They currently are 26th in the Supporter Shield standings.
A long-time member of the U.S. soccer ecosystem, Hackworth has close to 30 years of coaching experience at various levels. He previously served as head coach of the Philadelphia Union and USL side Louisville City FC, winning the 2018 USL Championship.
Hackworth also had prior stints with several U.S. youth national teams.
St. Louis continues its busy summer schedule with a July 3 showdown against fellow strugglers, San Jose Earthquakes.
