Newcastle announce three St James’ Park friendlies as the Sela Cup returns

Newcastle United have announced the return of the Sela Cup with three matches set to be played next month as the final preparations before the start of the new campaign.

As we revealed earlier today, Eddie Howe’s Mags will take on Girona – who finished third in La Liga last year – Friday 9 August at 7.30pm and Ligue 1 side Stade Brestois on Saturday 10th August at 4pm.

Not only will we be looking to retain the trophy that they won last summer, the Women’s team will also be playing against a yet to be announced team as part of the Sela Cup Weekender later at 1pm on the Saturday.

Becky Langley’s side achieved promotion to the Barclay’s Women’s Championship and will be looking to go one step further to hopefully get into the Super League in the not too distant future.

Day tickets for either day will be priced at £20 for adults and £10 for concessions with season ticket holder able to purchase tickets on Wednesday 3 July while general sale will be Friday 5 July.

Speaking on the return of the Sela Cup, CEO Darren Eales said:

“Welcoming Champions League calibre opponents reinforces the draw of Newcastle United across the top level of European football, and I’m sure each visiting club will play their part in creating a great weekend.

“We would once again like to thank our partners Sela for their support and expertise which will ensure that The Sela Weekender is an event to remember for fans of every club involved.”

Ibrahim Mohtaseb, Senior Vice President of Sela, added: “The Sela Weekender is a fantastic way to kick-off the new season, offering both the men’s and women’s teams of Newcastle United the chance to win silverware.

“As the club’s principle sponsor, Sela is committed to redefining the matchday…
