Newcastle pull out of £20m talks and two players offered in part-exchange – Report

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle United have dropped their interest in Burnley’s James Trafford following the arrival of two goalkeepers yesterday.

The club had a £16m bid rejected for the England U21 star last month and had quoted £20m during talks with the Clarets, but it seems we have now pulled away from any deal for the former Man City talent after Odysseas Vlachodimos and John Ruddy signed on Monday.

In the same piece for The Telegraph, Luke Edwards reveals that Liverpool discussed a part-exchange offer that included defenders Joe Gomez or Jarrel Quansah plus cash for Anthony Gordon; who was open to a possible switch as a boyhood Reds fan.

Edwards claims that Newcastle had to raise £60m in player sales with just 48 hours run before the PSR deadline and faced the very real prospect of a potential 10-point deduction heading into the 2024/25 season. This is thought to explain why we reluctantly listened to Liverpool’s offer before £68m was raised through the sale of Yankuba Minteh (£33m to Brighton) and Elliot Anderson (£35m to Nottingham Forest).

The report adds that Kieran Trippier and Miguel Almiron are both facing uncertain futures, although Callum Wilson could yet stay if we don’t find a suitable replacement, with this coming after we were priced out of a move for Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
