Newcastle United look set to face Girona at St James’ Park in the opening game of the Sela Cup in August.
The other two sides competing in the tournament are yet to be confirmed, but we can reveal that Newcastle will face Girona on Friday 9th August (7.30pm kick-off).
Girona finished third in La Liga last season and will take part in this year’s UEFA Champions League, offering Eddie Howe’s Mags an ideal test before our opening game of 2024/25 against Southampton the following weekend (17th August).
This will be the opening game of the ‘Sela Weekender’, with official confirmation of the other clubs competing set to be announced soon after OGC Nice, Villarreal and Fiorentina all took part in last summer’s event.
Here’s Newcastle’s confirmed pre-season plans to this point, starting with a trip to Hull City later this month:
27th July – Hull City vs Newcastle (2pm)
28th July – Fly to Japan for J. League Series
31st July – Urawa Red Diamonds vs Newcastle (7.30pm local time)
3rd August – Yokohama F. Marinos vs Newcastle (7pm local time)
9thh August – Newcastle vs Girona (7.30pm – Sela Cup)
10th August – Newcastle vs unknown opponents (Sela Cup)
17th August – Newcastle vs Southampton (3pm Premier League)
