Nightmare for Miguel Almiron and Bruno Guimaraes left frustrated at Copa America

Newcastle United duo Bruno Guimaraes and Miguel Almiron were both playing for their countries at Copa America in the early hours of Tuesday morning, where their final group-stage games took place.

Things went from bad to worse for his Miggy and his Paraguay side, who followed defeats to Colombia and Brazil in their opening two games with a shock 2-1 defeat to Costa Rica, seeing them finish bottom of their group on zero points.

It was a bad night for Almiron, who was hauled off at half-time after picking up a booking before the break. This the second time in three group games that the 30-year-old has been taken off before the hour mark after struggling to make an impact.

It’s been a tournament to forget for the winger tipped to leave for a Saudi club this summer. Paraguay fans appear to have turned on him based on the post-match reaction on social media, with the former MLS star now going over two years without a competitive goal for his country.

Then to Bruno, his Brazil side had to beat Colombia to top Group D and set up a favorable quarter-final against Panama; who qualified from Group C ahead of hosts USA . However, it ended 1-1 in California after Raphinha’s opener was cancelled out by Crystal Palace’s Daniel Munoz, meaning Bruno will now face an in-form Uruguay side coached by Marcelo Bielsa in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Guimaraes was booked alongside Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior, who is now suspended for this weekend’s quarter-final clash as a result.
