According to reports in Italy, Newcastle United are stepping up their pursuit of Malick Thiaw – although it sounds like we could face Premier League competition for the AC Milan centre-back.
We released an exclusive last June on Newcastle’s interest in the 22-year-old and his name has cropped up again over the past week; which makes total sense as the club looks to sign a young, athletic centre-back who can compete with Fabian Schar down that right side.
Italian outlet Calciomercato have issued an update on Thiaw’s future today, revealing that Newcastle have been in ‘direct contact’ with AC Milan over a deal for the German international who Eddie Howe ‘likes a lot.’
They go on to say that the Serie A giants are in no rush to sell, but would entertain bids in the region of €35-40m (£29-£34m), suggesting there’s a deal there to be done if Newcastle can stump up the cash.
It’s believed his agent is exploring the player’s options and will discuss interest from unnamed Premier League rivals in the coming days, with Thiaw ‘tempted’ by a move to England and keen to improve on his current salary of around £680,000-per-year, which works out at around £13,000-per-week.
Our information was that Newcastle were met with a £50m asking price following an enquiry last summer, so you can see why we’ve reignited our interest and are looking to strike a deal if Milan’s figures have come down considerably following an up and down season for the 6ft 4′ German.
