Paul Mitchell offers hidden boost to Newcastle after Amanda Staveley’s March admission

Paul Mitchell has been appointed as Newcastle’s new sporting director, with the highly-rated 42-year-old tasked with immediately supporting our summer transfer plans ahead of his arrival in the North-East next week.

It’s a superb move by the club and a sign of our ambition moving forwards, with the data-driven transfer expert enjoying impressive spells at Southampton, Spurs, RB Leipzig and Monaco during his career.

Alongside his impressive recruitment record, which we detail in this piece earlier today, it’s worth noting that Mitchell also has experience in supporting multi-club models; something Newcastle are actively seeking after talks with clubs in Belgium (KV Oostende), France (Dijon) and the Netherlands.

He helped oversee improvements at Cercle Brugge – part of Monaco’s ownership portfolio – during his time in France and that appears to have paid off, with the Belgian side going from a mid-table finish two years ago to second place in 2022/23 and fourth last season.

Speaking in March about our multi-club plans, Amanda Staveley said: “We very much are (interested in pursuing it). Multi-club is part of football. It’s a real benefit to be able to have players and train players that aren’t part of your squad.

“The UEFA rules are changing so we have to see what emerges. The dynamics around whether we could have a club has changed dramatically over the last year.

“I’m still a very big fan of the multi-club model. A lot of other competitors and friends in the Premier League have multi-club relationships, but it has to be considered as a whole.”

Whether it’s his expertise in transfers, experience at the top level or key role in some impressive operations in modern day football, he feels like a superb fit and a brilliant appointment to support Eddie Howe, Steve Nickson and the overall direction of the club.
