The 2024-25 Liga MX Apertura campaign began for a quartet of U.S. men’s national team players this past weekend.
Alex Zendejas, Cade Cowell, Brandon Vazquez, and Frankie Amaya all featured in the opening matches for their respective clubs. Club America are the reigning champions after winning the Apertura and Clausura titles last season.
Here is a rundown of the performances of all four players:
Zendejas started and played 90 minutes in Club America’s 2-1 loss to Atletico San Luis on Saturday. The 26-year-old created two goalscoring chances and registered one shot on target, but it wouldn’t be enough as Club America dropped three points on the road.
Cowell, 20, started and played 80 minutes in Chivas de Guadalajara’s 0-0 draw with Toluca. The American winger hit the crossbar once, while also winning five of eight duels.
Amaya, who joined Toluca from the New York Red Bulls earlier this summer, played six minutes off the bench for his Liga MX debut with Toluca
Vazquez and Monterrey traveled to Pachuca on Sunday, with the American forward playing 13 minutes off the bench. Monterrey earned a 1-0 road victory, jumping to fourth place in the league standings.
