Following Paul Mitchell’s appointment, The Athletic report that one of his first tasks will be to evaluate the Newcastle squad; especially the group of 12 senior players currently out of contract next summer.
As things stand, Callum Wilson, Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar, Sean Longstaff, Dan Burn, Jamaal Lascelles, Emil Krafth, Martin Dubravka, Mark Gillespie, John Ruddy, Ryan Fraser and Jamal Lewis all have 12 months left on their current deals.
Some are fully expected to leave – Fraser, Lewis and Dubravka – while others like Ruddy have only just arrived, but The Athletic report that we are we have explored potential exits for Wilson, Longstaff, Trippier and Krafth.
‘Nothing is agreed’ and it seems Mitchell will take stock alongside Eddie Howe and the club’s transfer committee after a hectic end to June saw Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh leave. However, the need to trade well and sell at the right time has never been more important in the world of FFP and PSR.
Wilson is 32 and could be eyeing a fresh challenge now he’s lost his first-team slot to Alexander Isak. The same could be sai for Longstaff, who will see his game time reduce following Sandro Tonali’s imminent return from a ban.
Trippier is 33 and could join Miguel Almiron in receiving a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, while some will feel now is a suitable time to sell with Tino Livramento pushing for a starting role at right-back.
Krafth is our third-choice option in the same position and is another who could be moved on. He’d need to be replaced and Howe clearly values his character and ability to step in with minimal fuss when called upon, but selling him now may seem preferable to losing him on a free next summer.
