Barcelona defender can terminate contract and receive full salary if not registered by tomorrow – report

Despite his uncertain contract registration outlook, Inigo Martinez has continued to train with Barcelona during the club’s pre-season campaign.

However, the time is running out for Barça to register the veteran defender, failing which, the club can face dire consequences.

Barcelona must register Martinez tomorrow

According to a recent report from Catalunya Radio, Barcelona may have just one day to resolve their contract situation with Inigo Martinez.

That is because of a special clause in Martinez’s contract, which should allow the defender to unilaterally terminate his contract and receive his full salary, if he does not register with the club before July 15.

That means Barça only have today and tomorrow to make sure they get Inigo registered. The club have already registered both Pau Cubarsi and Lamine Yamal recently.

However, their registrations were done through a special Article in La Liga’s regulation that allows clubs to register players who explode into the scene in a quick span of time.

Barcelona cannot utilise the same clause for Inigo Martinez, whose value, in fact, might have gone down since his move from Athletic Club last summer.

Implications of not registering Martinez

From a sporting perspective, losing Martinez could be a major blow as he is one of the very few left-footed centre-backs available in the team. The other one is Mika Faye, but the youngster continues to face an uncertain future at Camp Nou.

From a financial point of view, Barcelona failing to register Martinez could force the club to pay the defender’s salary for the next 12 months, since his contract at Camp Nou is valid until 2025.

This could prove to be catastrophic for the Blaugrana as the club still try to get their finances in place in order to bring in new players in the market.
