On Sunday afternoon, The Mirror released the following snippet on Newcastle United’s alleged ‘interest’ in Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry:
‘Newcastle are weighing up a £40million move for Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry. The former Arsenal reject – 29 today – faces an uncertain future after new Bayern boss Vincent Kompany beat Manchester United, Newcastle and others to land Michael Olise, 22, from Crystal Palace in a £50m deal. And recruiting a right-sided winger is one of Toon head coach Eddie Howe’s priorities this summer.’
It’s a transfer rumour many may have read in the build up to England’s Euro 2024 final with Spain on Sunday, but one that feels like an absolute non-starter, if the truth be told.
There’s no doubt that Newcastle are in the market for a quality right-winger this summer who can take our attack to the next level and offer a clear upgrade on Miguel Almiron. However, I am quite certain we won’t be spending £40m on a 29-year-old on huge wages who is not only past his best but missed 28 league games last season thanks to five separate injury problems.
You may wonder why we’ve bothered covering it if it’s a loan of nonsense, but a sprinkle of reality in amongst the transfer nonsense is sometimes needed when reports like this attempt to capitalise on our well documented need for a new right winger and link any old name with a potential big-money move to NUFC.
We’ll definitely sign a new one this summer, but it’ll be on a relatively young talent with his best years to come, not an ageing and injury-prone Gnabry.
