Saudi PIF set for Eddie Howe approach – The Times

According to The Times, Eddie Howe will become a leading contender for the England job if Gareth Southgate decides to leave his position after last night’s defeat in the Euro final.

As revealed by Matt Lawton, The Times’ Chief Sports Correspondent, Howe is of ‘serious interest’ and will be approached by the FA if Southgate departs; which appears to be the likely outcome after Sunday’s crushing loss to Spain.

England would have to seek permission from Newcastle United to speak with Howe and any compensation payout would be ‘expensive’, with the 46-year-old currently in a lengthy contract at the club.

The Times believe that Amanda Staveley’s exit could boost the FA’s hopes of luring Howe, as she was his main point of contact at the club and key to his appointment shortly after the Saudi takeover. However, it’s not yet known if Howe would entertain an offer to leave day-to-day Premier League management for the national job.

The same report states that a few other names are under consideration, with former Chelsea and Brighton boss Graham Potter a cheaper option, along with Lee Carsley, who guided our U21 side to European Championship victory last summer.
