Barcelona were dealt with a major blow during the summer’s footballing bonanza as key defender Ronald Araujo picked up an injury.
Recent reports now suggest the defender could be out at least until December, as he requires surgery. His absence could prove to be consequential for Barça, who were desperately looking to add quality to the team heading into the new season.
FIFA to pay €2.5 million for Araujo’s injury
As part of FIFA’s Club Protection Programme, the governing body are expected to offer compensation to Barcelona for the injury of Araujo.
The protocol stipulates that for each day that a professional cannot be available to his/her organisation, he/she is entitled to receive €20,548 per day for a maximum period of up to 365 days.
The highest amount an individual club can receive, therefore, is around €7.5 million. Barcelona are not expected to earn such a figure.
The Catalans, in fact, have not provided FIFA with an estimate on Ronald Araujo’s return. But MARCA estimates suggest the defender could be out for a period of around four months.

Keeping that in mind, Barcelona could receive a figure of around €2.5 million, which is barely enough if the club are planning to find an immediate alternative in the market.
The Uruguayan’s prolonged absence, though, may have major implications on the future of other defenders in the team, including the centre-back duo of Inigo Martinez and Eric Garica.
Recent reports indicate both defenders could end up remaining at Barcelona this season, in light of Araujo’s extended absence.
Araujo, meanwhile, is not the only Barcelona player to have picked up an injury this summer. Star midfielder Pedri also picked up a knock during Euro 2024 and similarly, Barcelona will receive compensation from FIFA.
