EFL issues RFP for rights to produce and sell documentary series

July 15 – The English Football League (EFL) has issued a Request for Proposal for interested parties to produce, distribute, and market an EFL documentary series, set to begin in the 2025/26 or 2026/27 season.

The series will follow the EFL’s competitions, while also providing Member Clubs with global profile building opportunities through an in-depth look at the teams, players and communities involved.

With almost 50% of EFL clubs now having international ownership, the producers will have access to all areas within clubs story lines to cover boardrooms, takeovers, fans and communities as well as laying departments and on-field perfomances.

The EFL has a model to follow with the Welcome to Wrexham documentary series having blazed a trail to Hollywood with its owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney and Wrexham having become the most-watched club in the US.

The EFL will create the access but the RFP puts the production and distribution of the content firmly in the hands of the production company.

EFL chief commercial officer, Ben Wright said: “This is an unrivalled content opportunity with unparalleled access for production partners to the some of the most unpredictable, intense and exciting competitions in world football.

“The EFL has a rich carousel of story-telling opportunities and between our Clubs and competitions, the creative scope for a documentary series is extensive and is a wonderful opportunity showcase the Clubs and competitions on a global scale.”
