Newcastle priced out of move for Euro 2024 star and five players discussed – Report

According to The Athletic, Newcastle United have been priced out of a move for Nico Williams in our search for a new winger.

They report that we’ve held long-term interest in the Athletic Bilbao star, who is in demand following his stunning displays at Euro 2024, but the club ‘cannot offer the wage packet necessary’ to lure the 22-year-old to Tyneside.

Chris Waugh reveals that our attempts to sign Michael Olise ended in a similar scenario, with Bayern Munich offering a salary we ‘could not get close to’ for the £50m talent who recently left Crystal Palace for the Bundesliga giants.

Other names have been ‘discussed’ include West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen, Chelsea’s Noni Madueke and Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga, while Lille’s Jonathan David is someone we’ve watched for a long time as we weigh up alternatives to Dominic Calvert-Lewin up top.

With a right-sided centre-back also a key target, The Athletic confirm that AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw is on our radar after long-term interest from Newcastle.

Interestingly, the same piece doesn’t rule out a fresh move for Burnley’s James Trafford, despite the arrivals of Odysseas Vlachodimos and John Ruddy to add further depth to an already bloated goalkeeper department.
