Barcelona consider offering a centre-back in deal to sign Arsenal midfield target

Due to the stellar Euro 2024 campaign Nico Williams enjoyed and the interest he has drawn from all over Europe, Barcelona have made signing the Basque winger a priority operation.

Nicos’ suitability in the squad and his chemistry with other Barcelona teammates in the Spanish national team have further incentivized the club to deem him an essential addition to their roster.

Apart from prioritizing his signature, the Catalan giants have not forgotten about their most vulnerable area in the squad: the defensive midfield position.

As part of their strategy, they have shortlisted several candidates, among them Real Sociedad’s midfield enforcer Mikel Merino.

According to SPORT, although no formal offer has been made, Merino’s team is aware of Barça’s interest.

Atletico Madrid and Arsenal are also interested, but a decision over his future is expected towards the end of the transfer window as he enjoys his vacation as a European Champion.

Furthermore, the report adds that following Robin Le Normand’s exit, Real Sociedad seeks a centre-back, and Barça have numerous options in that position.

With Mikel Merino entering the final year of his contract, La Real are not in a position to demand a high transfer sum.

As such, the inclusion of a central defender could allow Barça to negotiate a more favourable deal, potentially lowering the fixed costs of an operation expected to exceed €25 million.

Clement Lenglet, Eric Garcia, Inigo Martinez, and Mika Faye are seen as disposable players in Barcelona’s back line and could enter a trade deal.
