Barcelona want 22-year-old speedster to counter Mbappe to Real Madrid but move difficult

According to a report from The Athletic, Barcelona have a very specific reason for wanting to bring Nico Williams on board, as they see the winger as a strategic option to counter Real Madrid’s high-profile acquisition of Kylian Mbappe.

It is important to note that while Barcelona are very keen on Nico, Athletic Club have made it clear that his €58 million release clause must be paid in full. This financial demand sets a high bar for any potential suitors, including Barcelona.

Among the teams interested in Nico are Premier League giants Arsenal and Chelsea. Chelsea, in particular, have shown a long-term interest in the Spain international. 

They have been closely monitoring his progress and performances at Athletic Bilbao and his impressive displays have put him high on Chelsea’s list of transfer targets, especially in their priority positions.

Interestingly, the outlet suggests that Nico’s representatives believe he might stay at Athletic Bilbao for another season and this could be largely down to the player’s preference of moving to Catalonia.

With the European Championships now over, there is potential for movement, but Barcelona’s financial challenges make a move this summer uncertain.

Amidst all this, Barcelona face a significant hurdle in their pursuit of Nico after club president Joan Laporta indicated that while the club is capable of paying the €58 million release clause, there are internal issues to address. 

Some players have yet to be registered to play in La Liga due to ongoing contract situations and this has led to some frustration among them, as the club is publicly discussing new signings while asking for patience from those already on the roster.
