Girona manager keen on having forgotten Barcelona star back: “Need players in his position”

Girona manager Mikel has admitted that he would be thrilled about the possibility of having Barcelona defender Eric Garcia back in the squad.

Garcia is currently representing Spain at the Paris Olympic Games, striving for a gold medal. 

After the Olympics, he will return to Barcelona and aim to impress the head coach, Hansi Flick, to secure a spot in the first team, especially in the wake of Ronald Araujo’s injury. 

Meanwhile, Girona eagerly await the decision from Flick and the Blaugrana regarding Garcia’s future.

After Girona’s first pre-season friendly match against Olot, which ended in a 1-1 draw, Mikel expressed optimism about the possibility of Garcia returning to Montilivi. In an interview with Esport3, he said,

“With Eric, we will see what happens,” he began saying.

“What is clear is that we need players in his position. I have a lot of confidence in Quique and his team. And the club thinks the same, that we have to take a step forward. The club wants to grow,” he added.

Last season, Garcia was on loan at Girona, where he flourished under Mikel’s management. 

He became a crucial part of the team, consistently delivering top-notch performances while also ending as the highest-scoring defender in the league. 

Mikel’s ability to harness Garcia’s potential made the defender an indispensable player in the squad. Given his impressive stint at Montilivi, Mikel is keen to have Garcia back for the upcoming season.

Mikel is aware that he may not learn about Barcelona’s plans for Garcia until the final days of the transfer window. He pointed out that the market has been relatively quiet due to major international tournaments.
