According to Sky Sports, Newcastle United are exploring their option in midfield with six weeks left of the summer transfer window.
In an in-depth piece on what all 20 Premier League clubs are looking to do between now and the August 30 deadline, they report that we have been ‘looking at defensive midfielder’ and ‘central midfielders’, suggesting we could still add to our engine room despite moves for a right-sided centre-back, right-winger and back-up striker being the top priority.
We went into the summer looking pretty stacked in that position when everyone is fit and available, with Sandro Tonali’s comeback and Joe Willock’s return from injury two early boosts. However, we’ve since seen Elliot Anderson leave for Nottingham Forest, while Lewis Miley will miss all of pre-season and the start of the 2024/25 campaign after surgery on his foot.
Newcastle were heavily linked with midfielders in January – Kalvin Phillips was tipped to arrive before he ended up on loan with West Ham – but we opted to keep our powder dry, with PSR a major factor.
Over six months later, we no longer have any doubts around Joelinton, who has now signed a new deal despite concerns he may not earlier this year, but it sounds like midfielders are still being tracked, with another addition possible after Anderson’s exit and Miley’s second serious injury in the space of six months.
He’s likely to stay, but midfield options may also be looked at now Sean Longstaff has entered the final 12 months of his deal, meaning this would be the final summer we can sell for a fee unless he agrees a new contract. With the Academy-grown Geordie able to be sold for ‘pure profit’ in the world of PSR, we may be tempted to sell if the right offer arrives along with a suitable replacement.
