Tyler Adams to miss start of Bournemouth season after undergoing back surgery

AFC Bournemouth will not have the services of U.S. men’s national team midfielder Tyler Adams for its summer tour, or the start of the English Premier League season.

Adams is sidelined indefinitely after undergoing back surgery, Cherries manager Andoni Iraola confirmed Friday. After suffering a Copa America group stage exit earlier this month, Adams underwent the surgery to deal with a back issue which lingered over the final two months of the 2023-24 EPL season.

The 24-year-old joined Bournemouth last summer from Leeds United, but after undergoing a second hamstring surgery in October, Adams was forced to miss ample time on the South Coast. After returning to action in March, Adams made three appearances for the Cherries before joining up with the USMNT in June.

However, fighting through his back issue has now led to Adams’ latest setback, continuing the frustration for him and Iraola.

“He wanted to play Copa America because it was very important for him, but he had restrictions and was still in pain, so two days after they were knocked out, he had surgery,” Iraola said in a prematch press conference. “He is out for some time. It is difficult to say how long but he won’t be fit for the start of the season. But September? October? I don’t know.”

Bournemouth opens its preseason U.S. tour on Saturday against League One side Wrexham before also taking on Arsenal four days later.

The Cherries will open their Premier League schedule on August 17 at Nottingham Forest.
