Three weeks into the summer transfer window, Barcelona are yet to register a few of their key players, whereas Sergi Roberto’s contract has not been renewed.
The veteran midfielder has been a free agent since the start of July, with no real signs of Barcelona making any ground over his renewal process.
Earlier in the month, Barça had reportedly reassured Roberto of their desire to retain his services. But the club are still yet to resolve their economic woes and are thus not in a position to hand Roberto a renewal.
Roberto clinging on to hopes
According to MARCA, Sergi Roberto, for his part, is still desperately clinging on to the dream of continuing at Barcelona.
The versatile midfielder has several offers on the table. But he has not accepted any of them, as he refuses to say goodbye to the idea of leaving Barcelona.

The report does clarify that Roberto has started negotiating with other clubs and it won’t take him long to accept any of them.
Time, therefore, will be of the essence for Barcelona. If the Catalans fail to resolve their wage bill issues, they could run the risk of missing out on Roberto.
Implications of Roberto’s departure
Failing to retain the services of Sergi Roberto may have deep-lying implications for Barcelona heading into the new season.
For one, Roberto’s versatility could prove to be very handy for new coach Hansi Flick, as he deals with a lack of depth in certain pockets.
The right-back area, for one, could prove to be a pain point for Barcelona next season. Following the exit of Joao Cancelo, the club have limited options in the position.
The presence of Roberto, to that end, could have gone a long way in giving Barcelona temporary security in the position.
Apart from his versatility, Roberto could have offered leadership and experience, things that are vital in an otherwise young and inexperienced Barcelona team.
