Newcastle lined up move for former Mag before European setback – Report

According to The Athletic, Newcastle United were considering re-signing former Toon goalkeeper Tim Krul for his homegrown status until our European hopes were dashed at the end of May.

Despite finishing in a European spot in the Premier League and above Man Utd, it was the Red Devils who pipped us to a Europe after their shock FA Cup win over Man City.

This meant that Newcastle shifted their focus from signing Krul, who had spent 11 years on Tyneside and made 184 appearances for the club, and instead acquired veteran shot-stopper John Ruddy.

Former Chelsea and Stoke stopper Asmir Begovic was another option that had been suggested, as it’s believed Eddie Howe was keen to add some experience and leadership to the group after both Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummett were released.

It would have been good to see the former Dutch international back at St James’ Park after eight years away, even if it was unlikely that he would ever see any first-team minutes. The 36-year-old is currently at Luton and has had spells at Brighton and Norwich since leaving the club in 2017.
