With Sergi Roberto’s contract yet to be renewed, Barcelona are heading into the new season without one of their key leaders in the team.
Roberto’s experience and leadership had made him a vital part of the dressing room. But with the Spaniard seemingly no longer an option, Barcelona are actively looking for a fourth captain.
Following Roberto’s departure, Marc-Andre ter Stegen is primed to become the first captain of Barcelona. Ronald Araujo and Frenkie de Jong are the second and third captains of the team.
But with the fourth captain position remaining vacant, the club make must a decision in the coming days.
Pedri & Lewandowski emerge as favourites
According to AS, Pedri and Robert Lewandowski have emerged as two prominent candidates in the race to become Barcelona’s fourth captain next season.

Coach Hansi Flick prefers to have Lewandowski as captain due to the experience, leadership and weight he carries in the dressing room.
Although it hasn’t been long since Lewandowski joined the club, the Pole has become a vital part of Barcelona’s setup. He will continue to play a key role at least in the coming season.
At the same time, Flick will also accept Pedri as his fourth captain. The Spanish midfielder’s growth has been hampered by a series of injuries in the past few years.
But he still carries immense respect in the dressing room and holds a lot of sway among young players in the team, which could be critical going forward.
Not to mention, Pedri, unlike Lewandowski, is unlikely to leave the club in the near future, at least if he can avoid his injury woes.
Therefore, one can be forgiven for picking Pedri over Lewandowski as Barcelona’s long-term captaincy bet.
