For over a week now, reports in Italy have indicated that Newcastle United are back in for Malick Thiaw, but must be prepared to meet AC Milan’s €40m (£35m) asking price to sign the centre-back.
There’s been a lot of talk but few updates of substance since then – his agent has denied claims of an agreement today – and we’re still waiting for Newcastle to strike a deal with the Serie A giants, with Sky Sports’s Keith Downie reporting that there’s been a €10m gap in valuations, with Toon chiefs valuing Thiaw at more like €30m (£25m).
However, signs of progress could be on the horizon as Gazzetta dello Sport are reporting that €35m (£30m) may now be enough to land the 22-year-old German, suggesting a willingness to compromise from Milan’s end.
The same outlet state that Thiaw is ‘probably’ on his way out, with Red Bull Salzburg centre-back Strahinja Pavlović now all set to seal a move to the San Siro after Fabrizio Romano’s ‘here we go’ announcement on Sunday.
We don’t know the ins and outs, but reading between the lines and assessing reports we’ve seen over the past week on the Thiaw saga, a meet-in-the-middle deal of £30m could be struck if Milan are willing to lower their price slightly.
It’s not always that simple – I just hope we see progress soon with the season edging ever closer, the squad arriving in Japan and a new centre-back arriving at Milan.
