Eddie Howe issues a positive update on the fitness of Lloyd Kelly, Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff ahead of upcoming games in Japan, believing they are in a “good place” and will feature in at least one of this week’s friendlies.
All three stayed on Tyneside to train as we beat Hull City 2-0 on Saturday, with Kelly and Willock also missing out on our 3-1 win in Germany the previous weekend. However, it sounds like they are all making good progress and simply stepping up their fitness programmes.
Speaking to the media in Japan, Howe also revealed that his big aim ahead of the 2024/25 season is to get Newcastle back into the Champions League, hoping the coming year can be a “memorable season” that ends with a top four finish.
Last but not least (read his comments on all of the above below), he’s confirmed that Garang Kuol (knee), Alex Murphy (hip) and Joe White (back) are all missing from our Japan trip due to injuries.
Howe on Kelly, Willock an Longstaff – “I think you can expect to see all three of them in [at least] one of the two games. Probably more [likely] the Saturday, the second game. But all three trained today and trained well, so they look in a good place.”
Howe on aims for 2024/25 – “Last season was an amazing season for us. The experience in the Champions League was incredible and I think our aim has to be to try to get back there. Our focus is now having another memorable season.”
Howe on Kuol, A. Murphy and White – “With Garang, we’re waiting to see what happened with him. He’s got a little bit of swelling in his knee so we’re not sure if he’ll be okay.
“Joe White is nursing a sore back so again we’re assessing that one and Alex will be out for a couple of weeks with a hip problem.”
