Newcastle have agreed a fee with Blackburn Rovers to sign Irish teenager Rory Finneran.
We revealed back in May that Newcastle were closing in on a deal for the young midfielder and Fabrizio Romano has now announced that a verbal agreement is in place for the captain of the Irish Under-17 squad.
Despite just turning 16 a matter of months ago, Finneran appeared seven times for Blackburn’s Under 21s in the Premier League 2 last season. Alongside this, the young midfield talent has represented his country at Under-15, Under-16 and Under-17 level.
Finneran is perhaps most known in English football to this point for making his senior debut against Cambridge United in last season’s FA Cup at just 15 years old. In doing so, he became Blackburn’s youngest ever debutant. He is yet to make a competitive league appearance in his young career, but the experience showed him to be level-headed and he did not look overly out of place in the senior game.
The wonderkid projects to join up with Newcastle’s youth sides and developing into a homegrown talent over the coming years. Finneran appears to be another shrewd signing that shows the club’s recruitment team is operating with an exciting plan for the future.
