An intriguing update has arrived this afternoon from The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, who reports that Newcastle United may be closing in on a much-needed signing.
In an update on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon, he said: ‘I think we are close to seeing a breakthrough in #NUFC recruitment this summer. Trying to find out more but could be Thiaw. Could be a name that comes completely out of the blue.’
Now, I appreciate this is vague – he’s unsure if it’s Malick Thiaw or a deal that would come ‘completely out of the blue’ – but the fact he’s been told that we’re close to something is exciting and exactly what we needed to hear after weeks of silence and a sense of frustration behind the scenes and on social media.
On Thiaw, it was interesting to see Howe take questions on the AC Milan centre-back when speaking from Japan earlier today. He didn’t say much, but commented that the German is a “very good player.” Usually, Howe is reluctant to say a thing when asked to comment on a transfer link, so there’s that to consider.
As for a mystery name emerging from nowhere, it’s worth remembering that deals for Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali came out of the blue, with the club far better at keeping their cards close to their chest nowadays.
