Barcelona’s Financial Win: Former defender’s transfer set to bring in €1.3 million

Barcelona are poised to earn €1.3 million from the upcoming transfer of their former defender, Jorge Cuenca, who is set to join Premier League team Fulham from Villarreal for €6.5 million. 

Cuenca’s journey with Barcelona began in 2017 when he joined the club’s reserve team. Despite his time with the reserves, Cuenca struggled to make a significant impact on the first team. 

As a result, in 2020, he was transferred to Villarreal. The deal was valued at around €2.5 million with an additional €4 million based on future performance-related variables.

As part of the transfer agreement, Barcelona retained a 20% stake in any future sale of Cuenca. After moving to Villarreal, Cuenca was immediately loaned out to Almeria.

Barcelona have been gaining a lot recently

In recent years, Barcelona have adopted a new strategy to benefit from player transfers. Instead of only focusing on immediate gains, the club has started to reserve a percentage of future sales in its agreements. 

This approach is beginning to pay off. For example, Chadi Riad’s transfer to Crystal Palace this summer involved nearly €9 million, with Barcelona reserving 50% of any future sale when Riad was transferred from Betis.

Barcelona are also anticipating additional funds from another future transfer. Next summer, the club could receive up to €7 million from the sale of Jean Clair Todibo to Juventus. 

There is more work to do

Currently, Barcelona are focused on raising €40 million from the sale of Barça Studios, which is crucial for the club to comply with the 1:1 financial rule allowing them to participate in the transfer market. 

Despite these financial efforts, the club continues to benefit from its strategy of retaining percentages in future sales.
