Mbappé buys controlling stage in Ligue 2 Caen

August 1 – France and Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappé has become a club owner, completing a takeover of French Ligue 2 side Caen.

Mbappé has bought 80% of the club through his investment fund Coalition Capital for €15 million.

Coalition Capital bought their shares from US investment fund Oaktree. Oaktree had invested in Caen in 2020 bringing in new money to the northern French side when they were on the brink of bankruptcy.

Pierre-Antoine Capton, president of the club’s supervisory board, and who has led the club through both the share sales, to Oaktree and now the sale of their stake to Coalition Capital, will remain as a minority shareholder.

“It is an incredible opportunity for Stade Malherbe Caen to be able to count on Coalition Capital for its development. Its values, commitments and extraordinary vision of sport are unique assets for this project,” Capton said.

Caen were relegated from Ligue 1 in 2019 but last season finished sixth in Ligue 2. They open their new season on August 17 against Paris FC.

Paris-born Mbappé has a little history with Caen, having trialled with the club before choosing to sign his first professional contract with AS Monaco, before later moving to PSG.

This summer the 25-year-old completed a free transfer to Real Madrid.
