Newcastle’s pursuit of Marc Guehi has come as a very welcome surprise to a fanbase currently deprived of any real transfer excitement so far this summer.
The lack of serious activity thus far has led to some fans wondering if this deal is a tad too good to be true. As much as we are certainly unlikely to be lacking in competition for his signature, his positive comments about the club lead me to believe there is real potential this deal may happen.
For starters, Guehi has Newcastle connections due to his agency Unique Sports Group (USG), which is the same group that represents many of our English talents, including Gordon, Wilson, Miley, Lascelles and Hayden. Anthony Gordon is known to be USG’s most valuable client , with Guehi not all too far behind. This connection would hopefully make any potential deal easier, with many of our current roster hopefully able to give a glowing reference towards the club, not to mention the fact there’ll be plenty of history between his representatives and the club.
His friendship with Anthony Gordon, which was seen frequently in clips and interviews during England’s recent EURO campaign, should be another positive sign. After extensively praising Guehi following his exceptional performances early in the tournament, Gordon went on to say “I haven’t seen the Newcastle links but it goes without saying I would love him to come, as I think he’s a top, top player and he would make us a better team.”
Guehi, like many, has spoken about our brilliant atmosphere at St James Park, and how intimidating it can be on the away side. When asked about what was the best ground he had ever played in, Guehi replied “Probably Newcastle, St James Park, it’s really really loud in there.”
Knowing that those intimidating fans could potentially be chanting his name can only be a positive if we are serious about getting his signature. Although I remain sceptical, as do many, there are certainly signs that the rock in England’s…
