Newcastle chief travels to see €30m winger in Saturday night final – Report

According to reports in Turkey, Paul Mitchell has traveled to Istanbul to attend tonight’s Turkish Super Cup clash between Besiktas and Galatasaray, where attacker Baris Alper Yilmaz will be his key focus.

This comes from Fotospor, who report that our sporting director is a long-term admirer of the versatile, right-sided forward, claiming that he also tracked the 24-year-old during his time at AS Monaco.

The match kicks off at 6.45pm at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium and it’s claimed Mitchell flew over on Friday (potentially from our pre-season camp in Japan) to get into Istanbul ahead in good time.

Yilmaz, who can play across the front line, impressed in his five appearances at this summer’s European Championship and weighed in with seven goals and 12 assists in all competitions for Galatasaray last season.

It’s thought Newcastle can expect to face competition from Liverpool and Aston Villa, should we make an offer. A reported €30m price tag has been slapped on the attacker, with the Super Lig giants hoping to make a huge profit after signing him for just €2.1m in 2021.

Yilmaz is a hard-working player – this was clear from his all-action displays at Euro 2024 – that is comfortable carrying that ball with strength in pace, ball retention and dribbling.

It’s no secret that Newcastle are in the market to strengthen the right forward position, seeking a first team upgrade on Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy, so it’s intriguing to see another name linked.

Time will tell if there’s any truth in these reports emerging from Turkey, but he’s been linked before, is a good age (24) and fits the profile of a player the club will continue to target as we look for gems capable of taking their game to the next level under Eddie Howe.
