Mystery player ‘in talks’ with Newcastle and Toon handed major Guehi boost – Report

An intriguing transfer update has emerged from the i’s Mark Douglas today, who’s issued an update on Marc Guehi and revealed that Newcastle are also in talks with another unnamed centre-back.

Starting with Guehi, he insists that our interest in the Crystal Palace defender is ‘very real’ and reveals that the 24-year-old is ‘very much open’ to a move to the North East, suggesting he’d swap Selhurst Park for St James’ if a fee could be agreed.

That could be the tricky part, as it’s understood no deal has been agreed after ongoing conversations with the Eagles, who are demanding “north of £65m” for the England international after his impressive displays at Euro 2024.

Newcastle retain an interest in AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw, but it’s believed a third centre-back option is being seriously looked at, with iNews claiming that talks have been taking place over a mystery defender in parallel with our Guehi negotiation.

Who could it be, I wonder? In terms of other young, right-sided centre-backs who have been linked in the past and are yet to move, there’s Sporting Lisbon’s Ousmane Diomande, Antionio Silva of Benfica and Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo, although it seems the latter is likely to join Juventus.

Palace’s Joachim Andersen was a leading target last summer and profiles very similarly to Fabian Schar, but Newcastle may prefer a younger and slightly more mobile alternative to the 28-year-old Dane.

With Newcastle’s wait for a major summer signing dragging on, Douglas also shares a line he received from unnamed and ‘unruffled’ Newcastle executive, who said: “We’re waiting for the right opportunities and it’s not easy to get the best players in a market that’s pretty flat.”
