Club Brugge fans respond to Standard Liege anti-racism campaign with Nazi salute

August 5 – Responding to an anti-racism campaign by Standard Liege, some Club Brugge fans offered a Nazi salute at the Belgian league match on Sunday.

Wearing red and white masks, Standard Liège players entered the field accompanied by around 300 youth players to make a statement against racism, only to be met by fascist salutes by a section of the away fans.

They offered the Kühnen-salute – after the neo-nazi Michael Kühnen which serves as a variant of the Hitler salute.

In a statement, Club Brugge condemned the behaviour of the fans saying: “During the match, images appeared on social media of ‘supporters’ in the away section giving a so-called Kühnen salute. Club Brugge strongly condemns this behaviour.

“Club will investigate this further, actively support the police in this, identify the supporters and then impose sanctions within our capabilities. Club emphasises that there is no place for racism within the blue-black family.”

It’s not the first time that Brugge fans have shown racist behaviour. After the Super Cup against Union, the curtain raiser for the new season, a Brugge supporter made a Hitler salute. He was later identified by police.
